Tarique Rahman visited his father’s grave.

Tarique Rahman, the Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), paid a solemn visit to his father, the late President Shahid Ziaur Rahman’s grave, on Friday at 4:42 pm. The ceremony began with Rahman placing flowers on the grave, followed by prayers and supplications, reflecting deep respect and personal devotion.

Rahman departed from his Gulshan residence shortly before 3:00 pm, heading towards Zia Udyan in Dhaka. He travelled in a bus adorned in the party’s signature red and green colours—a bus that had also transported him from the airport to the public reception venue the previous day. As on Thursday, Rahman greeted party members and supporters from the front of the bus, waving his hand in acknowledgement. Due to the large gathering of enthusiastic supporters along the route, the convoy moved slowly, allowing Rahman to engage with the crowd.

From the early hours of the day, party leaders and activists from BNP and its affiliated organisations began assembling in and around Zia Udyan in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. Many carried the party flag, while others held banners and posters, expressing their solidarity and respect for the BNP leader’s return. The atmosphere was a mixture of reverence and celebration, marking the first visit by Rahman to the site after returning to Bangladesh following a 17-year absence.

Following the grave visit, Tarique Rahman is scheduled to pay homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar, continuing the day’s programme of commemorative activities.
