The three-match T20 series is scheduled to take place between 7th January and 11th January. This window is particularly critical as Pakistan’s T20 World Cup campaign is set to launch on 10th February against the Netherlands. Typically, a bilateral series against a competitive side like Sri Lanka would serve as the ideal dress rehearsal for a major tournament. However, the stars who are expected to lead the charge in the World Cup will be thousands of miles away from Colombo.

The reason for this mass exodus is the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia. Despite initial bureaucratic hurdles regarding No Objection Certificates (NOCs), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) eventually granted its players permission in October to participate in the Australian franchise tournament. Since the BBL commenced on 14th December and is slated to run until 25th January, it directly overlaps with the Sri Lankan assignment.

While other key players like Fakhar Zaman, Naseem Shah, and Hassan Nawaz were permitted to play in the ILT20, that league’s schedule allows them to return to national duty by early January. In contrast, the BBL’s lengthy duration means Babar and his colleagues are committed to their respective franchises for the duration of the Sri Lanka series.

Critics argue that prioritising franchise cricket over international preparation could hamper team cohesion before the World Cup. However, the PCB appears to be banking on a secondary window.
