In a decisive move to curb illegal commercial activities in residential areas, the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) conducted a mobile court operation in Sector-4 of Uttara, Dhaka. The operation targeted restaurants, fast-food outlets, and other commercial establishments operating unlawfully within residential plots.
The action took place on Sunday, 28 December, under the supervision of Zone-2/1 of RAJUK. The mobile court was led by Executive Magistrate Md. Sabuj Hasan, who oversaw the enforcement measures in the residential neighbourhood.
During the operation, a number of eateries and shops were sealed, illegal electricity connections were disconnected, meters were confiscated, and written undertakings were obtained from the proprietors promising compliance with the law.
Executive Magistrate Md. Sabuj Hasan emphasised the authority’s commitment to maintaining residential zones free from unauthorised commercial activity. He stated, “Operations of this nature will continue regularly to ensure that residential areas remain dedicated to housing, and non-residential activities are strictly curtailed.”
The establishments sealed during the operation included several well-known outlets, such as Ajoa, Testy, Hot Cake, and Bismillahir Sweets, along with other fast-food shops. All illegal electricity connections associated with these outlets were also addressed as part of the enforcement effort.
However, certain areas, including clubs and schools, were notably exempt from action, despite causing persistent congestion and illegal parking throughout the sector. In particular, 9 Number Road remains heavily congested due to the presence of two schools, the Bangladesh Club, the Armed Police Battalion office, and the RAJUK graveyard. The lack of enforcement in these zones has raised questions regarding selective implementation of regulations.
The mobile court operation was conducted under the comprehensive supervision of RAJUK officials, including authorised officer Md. Hasanuzzaman, assistant authorised officers, the chief building inspector, and other concerned personnel. The coordinated effort reflects RAJUK’s ongoing strategy to restore order and enforce planning regulations in Dhaka’s rapidly expanding residential sectors.
Summary of Sealed Establishments:
| Establishment Name | Type | Action Taken |
|---|---|---|
| Ajoa | Restaurant | Sealed, electricity disconnected |
| Testy | Fast-food | Sealed, meter confiscated |
| Hot Cake | Fast-food | Sealed, undertakings obtained |
| Bismillahir Sweets | Sweets shop | Sealed, electricity disconnected |
| Various others | Restaurants/shops | Sealed, illegal connections addressed |
The operation underscores RAJUK’s resolve to ensure residential sectors are safeguarded against unauthorised commercial exploitation, while highlighting ongoing challenges in managing traffic and illegal parking in mixed-use areas.
