Pop superstar Miley Cyrus has revealed that her appearance at the 2025 Oscars was far more than a mere glamorous attendance. The singer clarified that her primary objective was to establish herself as a songwriter within the film industry.
Cyrus, who has recently contributed to several high-profile film soundtracks, emphasises a proactive approach to her career, preferring to reach out to filmmakers rather than wait for opportunities. Earlier this month, she released “Dream As One” for James Cameron’s acclaimed science-fiction franchise Avatar: Fire and Ash. Prior to that, she penned “Beautiful That Way” for Pamela Anderson’s film The Last Showgirl.
In an interview with People magazine, Cyrus explained, “I always create my own opportunities. I knew what Cameron was working on with Avatar for years. I simply said, ‘If you ever need music, think of me.’ And naturally, the opportunity came.” She also highlighted Cameron’s affectionate reference to his collaborators as “Legends in L.A.”
Cyrus has applied this strategy with other industry figures as well. Her collaboration with Jamie Lee Curtis facilitated her involvement in The Last Showgirl. At this year’s Oscars, she reportedly informs anyone she meets that she is ready to contribute music to new projects. Additionally, she has submitted potential songs for a second season of Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, although the series has yet to make an official announcement.
| Year | Song | Film/Project | Collaborators |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | Beautiful That Way | The Last Showgirl | N/A |
| 2025 | Dream As One | Avatar: Fire and Ash | Andrew Wyatt, Mark Ronson, Simon Franglen |
| 2025 | Secrets | Something Beautiful (Album) | Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham |
“Dream As One” was co-written with Andrew Wyatt, Mark Ronson, and Simon Franglen, and appears in the credits of the third Avatar film. The song draws creative inspiration from the devastating Los Angeles wildfires earlier this year.
Cyrus’s recent initiatives underscore her versatility in both music and film. Her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, released in May, received a four-star review from NME, praised as “a fully realised artistic statement with a post-genre perspective.” The track “Secrets”, co-written with Fleetwood Mac legends Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham, was dedicated to her father, Billy Ray Cyrus.
Through her strategic collaborations and determined pursuit of opportunities, Miley Cyrus is carving a lasting place not just as a pop icon, but as a formidable presence in the world of film music.
