BNP Declares Seven-Day Mourning for Khaleda Zia

Dhaka, 30 December 2025 – The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced a seven-day mourning period following the death of its Chairperson and former Prime Minister, Begum Khaleda Zia. The announcement was made during a press conference held at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday morning by the party’s Senior Joint Secretary General, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.

At the press briefing, Rizvi paid tribute to the late leader, stating, “The Mother of Democracy, a relentless advocate for the restoration of democracy, and a symbol of citizens’ rights and freedom of expression, Begum Khaleda Zia passed away at 6:00 am today at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.” He expressed profound grief and extended condolences, highlighting her unparalleled role in Bangladesh’s political history.

Rizvi emphasised Khaleda Zia’s indelible contribution to the nation’s post-independence democratic movements. “She was a steadfast voice against authoritarianism, tirelessly working to restore parliamentary democracy and secure the voting rights of the people. Her dedication and leadership will remain eternally memorable in our history,” he remarked. Rizvi further urged citizens, BNP leaders at all levels, members of other political parties, and professional organisations to pray for her soul.

The seven-day mourning programme announced by the BNP will include the hoisting of black flags at the party’s central and district offices. Party members are expected to wear black badges during this period. Each office will organise Quran recitations and prayer gatherings, allowing both party members and the general public to participate.

In addition, condolence books will be opened at key locations, including the Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, the BNP central office in Naya Paltan, and district offices nationwide. Distinguished citizens, political leaders, and community representatives will be invited to record their memories and pay tribute.

BNP leaders emphasised that this mourning programme is not merely a party initiative but a national expression of respect for a prominent political figure. They noted that the void left by Khaleda Zia’s passing in the political arena will be difficult to fill.
