The funeral of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will be held tomorrow, Wednesday, after the Zuhr prayer at Manik Mia Avenue, adjacent to the South Plaza of the National Parliament. She will be laid to rest beside the grave of the late President Ziaur Rahman at Chandrima Udyan, marking a poignant moment in the nation’s history.
The announcement was made during a briefing following a meeting of the Advisory Council by Legal Adviser Asif Nazrul. He confirmed that BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir attended the session by special invitation and informed the council on behalf of Khaleda Zia’s family and the party regarding the funeral arrangements.
A special session of the Advisory Council on Tuesday began with a minute of silence in honour of the departed leader. Asif Nazrul noted that, like the rest of the nation, those serving in government are deeply saddened by her passing. The council unanimously approved a proposal declaring three days of state mourning starting Wednesday, with tomorrow designated as a general holiday.
The government has pledged full cooperation to ensure the funeral and burial proceedings are conducted smoothly. During the session, Chief Adviser reminisced about her last meeting with Khaleda Zia at the Sena Sadar and paid tribute to her enduring contributions to the country.
Legal Adviser Asif Nazrul emphasised that Khaleda Zia’s role in Bangladesh’s political history remains indelible. “The departure of such a leader marks a special moment in our nation’s history. It is the responsibility of all citizens to ensure that the funeral and burial are conducted with due respect and discipline,” he said.
In accordance with the Advisory Council’s decision, all Bangladeshi embassies and high commissions around the world will open condolence books to honour her memory. Meanwhile, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, addressing the nation, expressed profound grief over Khaleda Zia’s death. “With her passing, we have lost a great guardian. Her contribution to the democratic political landscape of Bangladesh will remain immortal,” he stated.
