Khaleda Zia’s Death: Dhaka University Suspends All Classes and Examinations for Three Days

Dhaka University has announced a three-day suspension of all academic activities following the death of Begum Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The decision reflects the university’s intention to observe a formal period of mourning and to honour the memory of one of the country’s most influential political figures with due solemnity and respect.

In an official press release issued on Tuesday by the University’s Public Relations Office, the authorities confirmed that a three-day mourning period will be observed from Tuesday through Thursday. During this time, all classes, examinations, and academic assessments across faculties, institutes, and affiliated bodies will remain suspended.

The statement noted that the decision had been taken “to ensure appropriate solemnity and to demonstrate the highest respect for the departed leader.” As part of the mourning observance, the national flag has been lowered to half-mast at all major university buildings, symbolising collective grief and remembrance.

The university administration further stated that future programmes would be aligned with national directives issued in response to the former Prime Minister’s passing. In addition to the suspension of academic activities, Dhaka University plans to organise a series of commemorative events, including academic seminars and memorial discussions, highlighting Begum Khaleda Zia’s political career, leadership, and contributions to the country’s modern history.

According to the press release, religious observances have also commenced across the campus. From Tuesday onward, Qur’an recitations and special prayer gatherings are being held at the central mosque, as well as in mosques located within residential halls, hostels, and staff housing areas. These prayers seek eternal peace for the soul of the late leader. The university has also confirmed that special prayers are being arranged at other religious places of worship, ensuring inclusivity and collective participation in mourning.

To facilitate attendance at Begum Khaleda Zia’s funeral prayers, scheduled to take place after the Zuhr prayer at Manik Mia Avenue on Wednesday, the university has arranged special transportation services. These services will be available for teachers, students, officers, and staff members wishing to pay their final respects.

Begum Khaleda Zia passed away at 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. She was 80 years old at the time of her death. Her passing has cast a pall of sorrow across the nation, prompting widespread expressions of condolence from political leaders, institutions, and citizens alike.
