In the shadow of notable events, another year has ended

The world has once again traversed a year marked by crisis, conflict, and human suffering. From the Middle East to Europe, from South Asia to Africa, 2025 bore witness to continued violence and widespread instability across the globe.

In Gaza, residents endured another year of extreme humanitarian crisis and brutal violence. The atrocities that began on 7 October 2023 against the Palestinian population persisted into 2025. Although a ceasefire was officially declared last October, attacks in the region have not completely ceased, leaving civilians in a state of prolonged fear and uncertainty.

Throughout the Middle East, instability extended beyond Gaza. Several countries experienced Israeli military aggression. In June, a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel inflicted severe damage, with U.S. involvement following an attack on Tehran’s nuclear facilities. While American diplomacy prevented the clash from escalating into full-scale war, the region remained on edge.

Even after reaching a ceasefire with Hezbollah, Israel continued its attacks in Lebanon and conducted operations in Yemen, Qatar, and Syria. Internal conflicts added to the turmoil. Syria remained unstable following Bashar al-Assad’s regime, with rival factions vying for control, while Yemen saw ongoing battles for power among competing groups.

Europe remained shadowed by the enduring Russia–Ukraine conflict, the most severe since World War II. Despite repeated U.S.-mediated negotiations, the war that began in February 2022 showed no signs of resolution by the end of 2025.

Africa also suffered deeply. Sudan’s protracted civil war, now extending over three and a half years, continued to generate one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises. North-eastern Congo witnessed extreme violence as factions battled for control, while West African nations including Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso faced persistent insurgent activity.

South Asia was not spared. A brief four-day war erupted between nuclear powers India and Pakistan, and Pakistan was involved in multiple border conflicts with Afghanistan. Myanmar experienced continued civil unrest, and border tensions flared between Thailand and Cambodia. Rising military posturing between China and Taiwan, along with tensions involving North Korea, Japan, and South Korea, added to regional instability.

Globally, anti-government protests surged. According to the Global Protest Tracker, at least 70 countries saw mass demonstrations against corruption, authoritarianism, and misrule, with several governments, including those in Nepal and Bulgaria, falling as a result.

The U.S. political landscape, marked by Donald Trump’s return to power in 2015, intensified global economic uncertainty. Trade tensions escalated, with high tariffs imposed on multiple countries despite ongoing negotiations.

Finally, climate-related disasters wreaked havoc worldwide. Europe, the United States, and parts of Asia experienced severe storms, wildfires, floods, and earthquakes, displacing millions and further compounding the human toll of 2025.
