As investigators followed financial trails connected to the company, the scope of the investigation expanded, eventually reaching Argentina’s football authority itself.

Another entity named in the investigation is Sur Finanzas, a financial services company that served as a sponsor of Argentina’s domestic league and national team last year. Media reports suggest that the company is suspected of evading taxes amounting to approximately USD 550 million, a figure that has shocked both the sporting world and the general public. Speculation has also emerged regarding the company’s reportedly close relationship with AFA president Claudio Tapia, although no formal charges have been announced.

AFA, for its part, has firmly rejected all allegations. In an official statement, the association claimed it is the victim of a “smear campaign” driven by commercial disputes, particularly disagreements with a businessman over the organisation of international friendly matches. The association has further asserted that the matter is known to President Javier Milei’s government and insists it has acted within the law.
