Ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Elections, the Election Commission has declared that six out of eight candidates who submitted nomination papers for the Rangamati constituency (No. 299) have been approved as valid. One candidate’s nomination remains under review, while another has been formally rejected.
The announcement was made on Thursday following the completion of the nomination scrutiny process, conducted at the office of the Rangamati Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer.
According to officials at the Returning Officer’s office, the nomination of independent candidate Pahel Chakma was invalidated due to a shortfall of signatures on the support forms. He failed to meet the requirement of signatures from at least one percent of registered voters. Meanwhile, the candidacy of Jasim Uddin, representing Islami Andolan Bangladesh, is pending due to an alleged outstanding water bill linked to his name. A final decision on his case is expected later today.

When asked about the rejection, Pahel Chakma told reporters, “My nomination was cancelled because my support forms were short by 79 signatures. I intend to appeal this decision and hope the outcome will be in my favour.”
Meanwhile, Jasim Uddin denied any outstanding bills, explaining that “the issue arose due to a namesake whose dues were mistakenly attributed to me. I will submit the necessary documents to clarify the matter.”
Additional District Magistrate Nishat Sharmin, speaking on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer, said: “Eight candidates submitted nomination papers for this constituency. Of these, six have been confirmed valid. The status of one candidate will be determined at 5 pm today, while one has been rejected.”
