Brutal Night-time Slaying and Schoolgirl Murder Shock Region

The districts of Rajshahi and Patuakhali have been gripped by fear following two separate but equally chilling acts of violence. In Rajshahi’s Bagha Upazila, a young man was gunned down in the sanctuary of his own home during the early hours of Sunday, while in a heart-wrenching discovery in Patuakhali, the body of a missing primary schoolgirl was recovered inside a plastic sack. Authorities believe both incidents were meticulously planned.

The Midnight Assassination in Bagha

The first tragedy unfolded in Korali Naoshara (Hobirchar) village under Bagha Upazila. At approximately 1:15 am on Sunday, a group of unidentified assailants forcibly entered the residence of 35-year-old Sohel Rana. According to family members, the attackers initially attempted to lure Rana out by calling his name. When he refused to respond, they cut through the corrugated tin fencing of the house and opened fire.

Sohel Rana, the son of Kalu Mandal, sustained fatal gunshot wounds to his ribs and chest. His wife, Swadhina Begum (30), was also injured during the struggle as she desperately tried to shield her husband. Dr Humayra Jerin, the medical officer at the local Upazila Health Complex, confirmed that Rana was dead upon arrival.

Local investigators and residents suspect this murder is a retaliatory strike linked to a violent territorial dispute on the Padma river chars. On 27 October last year, two men were killed by the notorious ‘Kakon Bahini’ gang over a dispute regarding hay cutting, followed by the recovery of another body the next day. It is widely speculated that the Kakon Bahini orchestrated this latest killing as part of an ongoing vendetta.

Tragic Discovery in Rangabali

In a parallel horror, the community of Rangabali in Patuakhali is mourning the death of 11-year-old Ayesha Moni. A fifth-grade student at Rangabali Saleha Government Primary School, Ayesha had been missing since Friday afternoon. Her body was discovered on Sunday morning, concealed within a plastic sack on the veranda of her family’s kitchen.

Ayesha was the youngest of four siblings. Her father, Babul Payada, works as a day labourer, while her mother is currently an expatriate worker in Saudi Arabia. The Officer-in-Charge of Rangabali Police Station stated that preliminary findings suggest the child was strangled to death, and her body was later dumped near the house.
