Police Sub-Inspector Detained for Courtroom Bribe Attempt

In Patharghata, Barguna, a shocking incident unfolded on Monday afternoon when a Sub-Inspector (SI) of the local police was apprehended for allegedly attempting to bribe a judicial officer. The accused, Shahriar Jalal, later handed over to Patharghata Police Station under bail conditions following a departmental inquiry.

The event occurred at approximately 2:00 pm in the chambers of the Patharghata Judicial Magistrate. Shahriar Jalal, who is currently stationed at Patharghata Police Station, reportedly entered the magistrate’s private office with the intention of recommending bail for an individual against whom an arrest warrant had been issued.

According to court sources, Judicial Magistrate Md. Panir Sheikh was in his private chamber when SI Jalal arrived and attempted to offer a bribe in exchange for influencing the bail decision. The magistrate, taken aback by the attempted inducement, promptly called for assistance.

The SI was subsequently detained in the presence of court police personnel, a Government Records Officer (GRO), and other court staff. News of the incident quickly reached the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Patharghata Police Station as well as the Additional Superintendent of Police for the Patharghata Circle. Both officials informed Barguna District Superintendent of Police, Kudrat E. Khuda, who intervened to ensure proper departmental procedures were followed.

Following assurances from the departmental authorities regarding appropriate action, SI Shahriar Jalal was formally handed over to the Patharghata police in the evening on a bail undertaking.

Speaking on the matter, OC Mongchenla of Patharghata Police Station stated, “The magistrate’s order will determine the next steps. This is a matter primarily between the judicial officer and the police personnel involved, and we will act strictly in accordance with the court’s directives.”
