Student Leader Faces Scandal, Show Cause Notice

Jamalpur’s Bakshiganj Upazila BNP Student Affairs Secretary and Upazila Chhatra Dal convener, Zubaidul Islam Shamim, has become the centre of a major controversy after images and reports of his alleged involvement in an extramarital affair circulated widely on social media. In response, the Jamalpur District Nationalist Chhatra Dal has issued him a show cause notice.

The development was confirmed by Jamalpur District Chhatra Dal President, Atiqur Rahman Sumil, and General Secretary, Md. Shafiqul Islam Shafik.

Alleged Incident

According to local sources, Shamim had been engaged in an extramarital relationship with the wife of Mahfuzur Rahman, a resident of Pollakandi village in Dewanganj Upazila, for an extended period. Mahfuzur Rahman’s wife is a mother of one child.

The incident came to light on the night of 1 January, when Shamim was reportedly found in a compromising position with the woman at her home. Local residents intervened, detained Shamim, and reportedly administered a public beating before informing his family. Shamim was then kept bound at Mahfuzur Rahman’s residence until senior party officials could intervene.

Bakshiganj Upazila BNP Vice President Gazi Mostafizur Rahman, along with former Bakshiganj municipal commissioner Kamruzzaman Sujon, mediated Shamim’s release. During the reconciliation meeting, Mahfuzur Rahman divorced his wife, and Shamim was compelled to marry her, reportedly under the terms agreed upon at the gathering.

Social Media Outcry

Following the circulation of videos and photographs depicting the incident, including scenes showing Shamim restrained and visibly injured, widespread public debate and criticism ensued. Social media users expressed outrage over both the alleged affair and the manner in which the confrontation was handled.

Party Action

In response to the viral scandal, Jamalpur District Chhatra Dal issued a formal show cause notice to Shamim on 6 January. He has been instructed to appear in person before the district president and general secretary within 48 hours to provide an explanation.

Speaking on the matter, Atiqur Rahman Sumil said: “Shamim has been formally shown cause for his actions. A final decision will be made after we receive his explanation.”

The incident has sparked intense debate across the district, raising concerns over the conduct of political leaders and the reputational impact on affiliated organisations. Analysts note that scandals of this nature may erode public trust in local leadership and underscore the need for accountability.
