A fatal cocktail explosion in Shariatpur’s Jajira upazila has claimed the life of 32-year-old Sohan Bapari. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday in Bilashpur Union, and his mangled body was later discovered in a field nearly half a kilometre away from the site of the blast. Police from Jajira Thana recovered the body and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Sohan, a resident of Baparikandi village and son of Delwar Bapari, reportedly left his home around 11 pm on Wednesday night. His family explained that he seldom stayed at home due to ongoing disputes in the area and a pending lawsuit filed against him. His sister, Majeda Akter, confirmed that her brother had been hiding at various locations to avoid confrontation with Nasir Bapari, a local rival.
According to Officer-in-Charge Saleh Ahmed of Jajira Police, “In the early hours of today, a residential house in Satghariakandi was subjected to a cocktail explosion. The house contained bomb-making and cocktail manufacturing equipment. A bloodied and mutilated body was found in a nearby agricultural field. We are investigating the cause of the explosion and the circumstances of the death. The area is currently cordoned off.”
This latest incident is part of a series of violent clashes between local factions. Last Sunday, over a hundred cocktail explosions occurred in Budhairhat market of Bilashpur Union during a confrontation between the two groups, resulting in injuries to 20-year-old Jabed Sheikh.
Police sources indicate that disputes between supporters of Kuddus Bapari and Abdul Jalil Matbor, who were previously implicated in multiple explosions in the area, continue to fuel ongoing confrontations. Matbor is currently incarcerated, while Kuddus Bapari was released on bail. Their supporters—Mannan Bapari backing Kuddus and Nasir Bapari supporting Jalil Matbor—are now attempting to assert dominance over the locality.
