Vijay’s Latest Film Postponed Amid Certification Dispute

The release of Jana Nayagan, the much-anticipated film starring South Indian megastar Thalapathy Vijay, has been officially postponed, casting a shadow over what was expected to be one of the most significant cinematic events of the year. The film, widely described as Vijay’s final on-screen appearance before his full-time entry into politics, was scheduled to hit cinemas on 9 January. However, the absence of a censor certificate from India’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has forced the producers to halt the release at the eleventh hour.

The delay stems from unresolved certification issues that have now escalated into a legal matter. According to industry sources, the CBFC initially reviewed Jana Nayagan and recommended several cuts to specific scenes, indicating that a certificate would be granted once these changes were made. Unexpectedly, the certification process was then paused, and the film was referred to a newly constituted review committee for re-evaluation. This sudden development prompted the producers to seek legal recourse, leading them to approach the Madras High Court.

The court is scheduled to deliver its ruling on 9 January—the same day the film was due for release. Faced with the possibility of legal uncertainty and last-minute complications, the production house decided not to proceed with the theatrical launch. In an official statement, Jio Studios confirmed the postponement and assured audiences that all advance bookings, both in India and overseas, would be fully refunded.

The announcement has disappointed millions of fans who had been counting down to the release, many of whom see Jana Nayagan as a landmark moment in Vijay’s illustrious career. Nevertheless, several prominent figures from the Tamil film industry have come forward to express solidarity. Actor Silambarasan TR shared a message of encouragement, stating that the day Jana Nayagan finally releases will mark the beginning of a true celebration. Actor Ravi Mohan echoed similar sentiments, emphasising that the joy of the film will only be complete once it reaches audiences in theatres.

Beyond the controversy, Jana Nayagan remains one of the most star-studded Tamil productions in recent years. Alongside Vijay, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, Priyamani and Sunil. The film is believed to explore themes of social justice and leadership, further fuelling public interest given Vijay’s growing political profile.
