Political Gains Driving Mustafizur’s IPL Snub, Claims Ashraful

The former General Secretary of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and ex-CEO of the Asian Cricket Council, Syed Ashraful Huq, has issued a scathing critique of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). In an exclusive interview with the Times of India, Huq alleged that the decision to exclude Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL) was a “political card” played to influence upcoming elections in West Bengal and Assam.

The Hijacking of the Cricket Ecosystem

Huq, a veteran administrator, argued that the “cricket ecosystem” in the subcontinent—specifically in India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan—has been hijacked by politicians with little to no cricketing background. He contrasted the current leadership unfavourably with legendary administrators of the past.

“Consider the era of Jagmohan Dalmiya, I.S. Bindra, or Madhavrao Scindia. Would this ever have happened under their watch? Never,” Huq asserted. “They were mature individuals who understood the nuances of the game and the far-reaching consequences of such decisions.”

He specifically pointed to Jay Shah in India and the current interim administration in Bangladesh as examples of leaders lacking competitive playing experience, leading to impulsive and damaging decisions.

Religious Sentiment and Electioneering

Mustafizur Rahman was recently dropped from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) following threats from extremist groups citing alleged persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh. Huq questioned the consistency of this religious stance, asking if the BCCI would have taken the same action had the player been a non-Muslim, such as Litton Das or Soumya Sarkar.

According to Huq, the timing is no coincidence. With legislative assembly elections looming in West Bengal and Assam, he believes politicians are stoking “cheap religious emotions” to secure votes, effectively jeopardising the sanctity of international sport.

Risks to the T20 World Cup

The fallout of the IPL snub has placed the T20 World Cup, scheduled for February in India, in significant jeopardy. The BCB has already petitioned the International Cricket Council (ICC) to relocate their matches, arguing that if India cannot guarantee the safety of a single player in a domestic league, they cannot ensure the security of an entire national contingent at a global event.

Bangladesh’s Sports Advisor, Asif Nazrul, has remained adamant that the team should not travel to India under current conditions. While Huq criticised the bluntness of such political remarks, he agreed that national dignity must come before financial gain. He suggested that relocating Bangladesh’s fixtures to Sri Lanka would provide a “win-win” solution for all stakeholders.

“If the ICC cannot move the matches, I highly doubt Bangladesh will travel to India. We may suffer financially, but national honour is far more valuable than any monetary loss,” Huq concluded.
