Government Pushes Primary Education Reform

The Government is working tirelessly to strengthen primary education, recognising it as the cornerstone of national development, Primary and Mass Education Adviser Dr Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar has said.

Speaking on Sunday (11 January) during a visit to several government primary schools in Sunamganj, Dr Poddar stressed that the quality of education children receive at the primary level plays a decisive role in shaping their future and, ultimately, the future of the nation. He noted that ensuring high-quality primary education requires the collective commitment of teachers, parents, education officials and the wider community, alongside sustained government support.

During his visit, the adviser inspected three government primary schools located in the Midnagar upazila of Sunamganj district: Galha Government Primary School, Jamsherpur Government Primary School, and Midnagar Bazar Government Primary School. At each institution, he reviewed the overall learning environment, classroom teaching practices, student attendance rates and various infrastructural facilities.

Dr Poddar held discussions with teachers to understand the challenges they face in delivering quality education, particularly in rural and semi-rural areas. He encouraged the adoption of more child-friendly and interactive teaching methods, emphasising that effective learning depends not only on textbooks but also on creativity, engagement and a supportive school atmosphere. He also highlighted the importance of regular student attendance and active parental involvement in children’s education.

The adviser said the Government has already undertaken a number of initiatives to improve primary education nationwide. These include upgrading school infrastructure, constructing new classrooms, repairing ageing buildings, providing modern teaching aids, strengthening teacher training programmes and expanding digital learning facilities. In addition, measures such as stipends for disadvantaged students and school-based nutrition programmes are being implemented to reduce dropout rates and ensure inclusive access to education.

Dr Poddar reiterated that the Government’s long-term vision is to build a skilled, ethical and knowledgeable generation capable of contributing meaningfully to national progress. He added that consistent monitoring, field-level inspections and open dialogue with educators are essential to maintaining standards and addressing local needs effectively.

The inspection programme was attended by the Secretary of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education, Abu Taher Md Masud Rana, Midnagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Ujjal Roy, as well as local education officers and representatives from various government departments. They discussed ongoing challenges, resource requirements and potential strategies to further enhance the quality of primary education in the region.

A brief overview of the schools visited is presented below:

Concluding his visit, Dr Poddar expressed optimism that ongoing reforms and coordinated efforts at all levels would significantly strengthen the country’s primary education system, ensuring equal learning opportunities for every child and laying a solid foundation for sustainable national development.
