In a move widely lauded by the financial sector, Dr Md Ezazul Islam has been appointed as the new Director General of the Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management (BIBM). A seasoned economist with a distinguished career spanning over three decades at the central bank, Dr Islam’s appointment is viewed as a strategic step toward elevating the research and training standards within Bangladesh’s banking industry.
Before assuming his new role at BIBM, Dr Islam served as an Executive Director (Grade-1) at Bangladesh Bank, where he primarily headed the Monetary Policy Department. His tenure at the central bank was marked by pivotal contributions to the nation’s macroeconomic stability. He served as a key member of several high-level bodies, including the Monetary Policy Committee, the Foreign Exchange Auction Committee, and the Money Market Operation Committee.
Dr Islam is perhaps best known for his leadership in modernising the country’s monetary policy framework. He played a central role in the implementation of the Interest Rate Corridor (IRC), a mechanism designed to ensure stability in the money market by guiding short-term interest rates. His efforts in strengthening liquidity management and simplifying the instruments used in money market operations have earned him significant acclaim from both domestic and international financial analysts.
A scholar at heart, Dr Islam holds a PhD in Monetary Economics. His intellectual contributions to the field are extensive, with over 35 research papers published in reputable national and international refereed journals. His research focuses on a broad spectrum of financial topics, ranging from exchange rate dynamics and debt sustainability to credit markets and macro-financial stability.
In 2013, his dedication and professional excellence were formally recognised when he was awarded the Bangladesh Bank Gold Medal (Employees Recognition Award), the highest honour bestowed upon employees of the central bank.
