Teenage Girl’s Child Marriage Plans Halted By Mother’s Phone Call

In Dinajpur’s Ghoraghat Upazila, the planned child marriage of a 14-year-old eighth-grade girl was successfully stopped by local authorities following a timely intervention by her mother. The incident occurred on Sunday night around 9 pm, highlighting both the dangers of underage marriages and the critical role of parental vigilance and administrative action.

The Planned Marriage

According to local police and neighbours, the girl is a student at a nearby secondary girls’ school. Her father had arranged for her marriage with Sagar Islam, a resident of Gobindaganj Upazila in Gaibandha, finalising the date the previous week. The wedding was scheduled to take place on Sunday evening.

However, the mother was strongly opposed to the marriage due to her daughter’s minor status. She had repeatedly requested her husband not to proceed with the wedding, leading to disputes between the couple. On the night of the scheduled wedding, upon learning that the groom’s party had arrived at their home, the mother immediately contacted the Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) seeking urgent assistance to halt the ceremony.

Administrative and Police Intervention

The UNO promptly dispatched police officers to the village. On receiving reports of police presence, the groom’s party abandoned the ceremony midway. Authorities then verified the girl’s birth certificate and other relevant documents, confirming that she was under 18 years old. Consequently, the marriage was legally prevented.

The police also issued a formal warning to the girl’s father, instructing him not to attempt any marriage until his daughter reaches the legal age of 18. Furthermore, the family received directives to ensure her continued education and social protection.
