Clash Between BNP and Jamat Supporters in Netrokona Leaves Three Injured

In Netrokona’s Kendua Upazila, a violent confrontation between supporters of the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami on Monday night (12 January) left three individuals injured. The incident, which occurred in the Bangbazar area of Royailbari Union, sparked heightened tension across the locality for several hours.

According to local sources, the clash began following a heated exchange between the two factions in the evening. The altercation quickly escalated into physical violence, resulting in injuries to Takbir Mia, son of Juel Mia; Tamim Mia, son of Abdul Salam; and Ruman Mia, son of Nowshad Mia. All three injured parties are residents of Kolsohati village and are known Jamaat supporters. They received immediate on-site medical attention from local healthcare providers.

Residents have indicated that the root of the conflict was a dispute over political affiliations that emerged during a religious ceremony held in Kolsohati on 10 January. The following day, tensions continued to rise at the local mosque, with verbal confrontations reported between the rival factions. The Monday night clash is considered a direct continuation of these preceding incidents.

Kendua Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Mehedi Maksud, stated, “Upon receiving reports of the clash, law enforcement officers promptly arrived at the scene. The situation is currently under control. Additional police personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order. All complaints will be thoroughly investigated, and legal action will be taken as necessary.”

In the aftermath of the clash, residents have been urged to exercise caution, and police vigilance has somewhat stabilised the surrounding market areas. Nonetheless, locals express concern that, without dialogue between the two factions, further disturbances could occur.

The incident is being viewed as significant in the local political landscape, with potential implications for relationships between central party supporters and local leadership. Analysts suggest that such confrontations could influence future political dynamics and decision-making within the community.
