Five Thousand Tonnes of Indian Rice Arrive

A significant consignment of parboiled rice from India has successfully docked at Mongla Port, marking another milestone in the government’s strategic efforts to bolster national food security. The arrival of the vessel is part of an expansive international procurement initiative designed to stabilise domestic market prices and ensure a steady supply of staples for the populace.

Arrival and Quality Inspection

The MV Hong Tan, a merchant vessel sailing under the Vietnamese flag, arrived at the port’s base creek on the evening of Tuesday, 13 January 2026. Carrying precisely 5,000 metric tonnes of parboiled rice, the ship underwent immediate preliminary checks.

On Wednesday, a high-level delegation—including Mohammad Abdul Kader Azad, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Food, and SK Moshiur Rahman, the Khulna Movement and Storage Controller—conducted an on-site inspection. Samples were meticulously collected and dispatched to specialized laboratories in Dhaka and Khulna to verify the grain’s quality, nutritional standards, and moisture content.

According to Muhammad Abdul Sobhan Sardar, the Assistant Food Controller at Mongla, the unloading process is scheduled to commence on Thursday evening, provided the laboratory results meet the stringent criteria set by the Food Department.

Distribution Strategy and Wider Procurement

Once the “all-clear” is received from the analysts, the 5,000 tonnes of rice will be discharged from the vessel—a process expected to span four to five days. The grain will then be transported via river routes to various government silos across the Khulna and Barisal divisions.

This shipment is merely a fraction of a larger Government-to-Government (G2G) agreement involving three neighbouring nations.

Economic Impact and Food Stability

To date, Mongla Port has facilitated the entry of 25,000 metric tonnes of rice under this specific contract. By diversifying supply chains and engaging with regional partners like India, Myanmar, and Pakistan, the Ministry of Food aims to mitigate the risks of seasonal shortages.

The use of riverine transport to move the cargo from Mongla to local godowns is a strategic choice, reducing the burden on road infrastructure and lowering logistics costs. As the MV Hong Tan prepares to depart after its unloading cycle, authorities remain vigilant, ensuring that every grain delivered meets the quality expectations of the Bangladeshi consumer.
