Violence at BNP Meeting Claims One Life

A violent altercation during a Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) gathering in Noakhali’s Kabirhat upazila on Saturday night resulted in the death of one individual. Local sources reported that the incident occurred at around 10:00 pm near the Kazi Bari, adjacent to Kalirhat Market in Ward 2 of Narottampur Union.

The deceased has been identified as Mizanur Rahman, known locally as Roni, aged 35. He was the son of Md. Shahid of Jainpur village under Kabirhat Municipality and father to two children. According to police and local sources, Mizanur had six pending legal cases against him, including charges of robbery and other criminal offences.

Eyewitnesses described that the BNP meeting, held at Kalirhat Market at 8:00 pm, was convened to prepare for the forthcoming 13th parliamentary elections. Mizanur was present and asserted his loyalty as a dedicated party activist. However, tensions arose when he reportedly became involved in a dispute with leaders of other parties. When several leaders attempted to remove him from the meeting, he reportedly left the venue voluntarily.

Approximately two hours later, a group intercepted Mizanur near Kazi Bari. The assailants allegedly assaulted him with sticks and iron pipes, resulting in his immediate death. His body was later abandoned on the road. Police subsequently recovered the body and confiscated bloodstained weapons from the scene. A toy pistol and a knife were reportedly found in Mizanur’s possession.

Harunur Rashid Harun, former president of Ward 2 BNP, stated, “We were discussing election-related matters in our office when Mizanur began making opposing statements. We asked him to leave, and he did. Later, I heard about his killing, but we do not know who is responsible.”

Md. Manzur Alam, investigation officer of Kabirhat Police Station, confirmed, “Mizanur had multiple pending cases. A group of individuals attacked him, leading to his death. The body has been sent to Noakhali General Hospital for post-mortem examination.”

The summary of allegations against the deceased is as follows:

Name Age Address Number of Cases Type of Allegations
Mizanur Rahman (Roni) 35 Jainpur, Kabirhat 6 Robbery and other offences

As of Saturday morning, Mizanur’s family had not filed any formal complaint with authorities. Police stated that appropriate legal action will be taken once a written complaint is submitted.

The incident has raised concerns among local residents and political observers, particularly given its proximity to national elections. Analysts have warned that such violent episodes could exacerbate political tensions in the region and undermine the electoral process.
