The United States has killed a senior leader close to al-Qaeda

The United States military has killed a leader affiliated with Al-Qaeda who was linked to attacks against American personnel in Syria, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Saturday, 17 January. The operation marks the latest in a series of US military actions targeting terrorist networks in the Middle East. The news was reported by Reuters.

CENTCOM identified the deceased as Bilal Hasan al-Jassim, a figure allegedly connected to a gunman associated with the Islamic State (ISIS). According to the statement, al-Jassim had a “direct link” to the gunman involved in an incident on 13 December in Palmyra, Syria, in which both US and Syrian military personnel suffered casualties.

Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US CENTCOM, said in the statement: “The elimination of a terrorist connected to the deaths of three American citizens demonstrates our unwavering commitment to hold accountable those who target our forces.”

Since the 13 December attack, US forces have reportedly conducted a series of strikes across Syria, targeting ISIS operatives and infrastructure. CENTCOM has stated that more than 100 ISIS targets have been neutralised in these operations, highlighting the scale and persistence of US efforts to disrupt militant activity in the region.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, in a post accompanying the CENTCOM statement, reinforced the message of resolve, declaring: “We will never forget. We will never stop.” The remarks underscore Washington’s ongoing focus on counterterrorism operations, particularly in volatile areas where extremist networks operate with relative freedom.

This action is part of a broader US strategy in the Middle East aimed at weakening ISIS and other affiliated groups, while safeguarding American forces and regional allies. Analysts note that such targeted strikes serve both tactical and symbolic purposes, demonstrating the US military’s capability to respond rapidly to threats against its personnel.
