In a shocking incident on Saturday afternoon, 17 January, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shakhipur Police Station, Md. Nazim Uddin Majumdar, was reportedly shoved by Atikul Islam Somel, a leader of the now-banned student organisation, Bangladesh Chhatra League. The incident took place at Shakhipur Bazaar in Bhedarganj Upazila, Shariatpur district, during an official inspection of local businesses.
Md. Nazim Uddin Majumdar, the OC, was on duty conducting an awareness campaign among traders regarding the illegal sale of unpackaged cooking oil. While on his routine inspection, he spotted Somel, the president of Shakhipur Thana Chhatra League, inside a local shop. “Upon seeing us, he attempted to flee the scene. When I asked him to confirm his political identity, he refused and pushed me away,” OC Majumdar told reporters. In the ensuing scuffle, the OC sustained a partial injury to the nail of his little finger. He immediately sought medical attention at a nearby hospital.
Somel hails from Sardar Kandi village within Shakhipur Union and is the son of the late Mojibur Sardar. Local sources indicate that police are now keeping a close watch on him, and legal action is expected to follow.
The incident has caused unrest in the local marketplace. Shopkeepers expressed concern over public safety, stressing the importance of law enforcement maintaining order. “Such behaviour is unacceptable in a public space. Police must act decisively,” a trader said.
