Wedding Night Shock at Marriage Court

What began as the joyous celebration of a newlywed couple’s union in Thakurgaon’s Ranisankail has spiralled into a bitter legal dispute, capturing the attention of the entire district. According to the groom, Raihan Kabir, the bride he married on the wedding night was not the woman he had been shown prior to the ceremony, sparking allegations of a so-called “bride swap.”

The controversy erupted immediately after the traditional post-wedding rituals. Raihan claims that upon washing the bride’s face on the wedding night—a customary practice—he realised that she was not the woman he had been introduced to during the marriage arrangements. What had been intended as a celebration of new beginnings quickly turned into a legal entanglement, as both families filed counter-cases within hours of the wedding.

The marriage took place on 1 August last year between Raihan Kabir, son of the late Ibrahim from Chandipur in Pirganj, and the middle daughter of Ziarul Haque from Bhandar in Ranisankail. Despite multiple reconciliation attempts through several mediation meetings, the families failed to reach an agreement.

Subsequently, on 27 August, the bride’s father lodged a case against Raihan Kabir and his brother, Manik Hasan, at the Thakurgaon court. In retaliation, Raihan filed a separate case against the bride’s father and the matchmaker, Motaleb, on 2 September.

On Monday, 19 January, the court rejected Raihan Kabir’s bail application and ordered him to be remanded in custody, highlighting the seriousness of the ongoing legal proceedings.

According to the groom’s uncle, Badal, the matchmaker Motaleb had introduced a potential bride at a tea stall in Shivdighi, Ranisankail, in late July. Following the initial approval, the girl’s family reportedly rushed the marriage proposal without presenting the bride in person to the groom’s household.

“On the wedding night, excessive makeup concealed the differences, but once her face was washed, Raihan realised the deception. We suspect the bride swap was deliberate,” said Badal. The bride was subsequently returned to her father’s home on 2 August.

These allegations have been firmly denied by the bride’s father, Ziarul Haque, who insists that the groom’s family saw the correct bride beforehand and that approximately 70 guests attended the wedding. He also claims that the groom’s family demanded a dowry of ten lakh taka the day after the wedding and are now levelling false accusations to defame his family.

Matchmaker Motaleb echoed these denials, stating that the bride was presented at her father’s house and that the groom’s side hastened the marriage.

Lawyer Zainal Abedin, president of the Thakurgaon Bar Association and representing Raihan, commented: “Our client alleges that the bride’s family and the matchmaker colluded to deceive him. The matter is now in court, and we hope that the legal process will reveal the truth.”
