Authorities in Borhanuddin, Bhola, have apprehended a 25-year-old expatriate on charges of attempted rape involving a local college student. The suspect, identified as Md. Raihan, allegedly used the pretext of a marriage proposal to exploit the victim. The arrest follows a formal complaint lodged by the victim on Tuesday, 20 January 2026.
According to the case files, Raihan—the son of Abul Bashar from Ward No. 1 of Kachia Union—had been residing in Dubai for work. Approximately eight months ago, he initiated a connection with the college student through Facebook. Over the following months, the digital interaction evolved into a romantic relationship, maintained through frequent mobile communication and video calls.
Raihan returned to Bangladesh from Dubai on 30 December 2025. Upon his arrival, he reportedly intensified the relationship by promising marriage to the student. Under this guise, he escorted her to various locations, including local hotels within the sub-district, further cementing the victim’s trust in his intentions.

The situation took a criminal turn on Monday night when Raihan visited the home of the victim’s uncle. Claiming he wished to finalise marriage arrangements with her family, he requested to stay the night. Granting him hospitality based on his stated intentions, the family provided him with a guest room.
Police reports indicate that once the household had fallen asleep, Raihan surreptitiously entered the student’s bedroom and attempted to rape her. The victim’s screams alerted the family members, who rushed to her rescue. Realising he was caught, Raihan managed to flee the premises under the cover of darkness.
Following the harrowing ordeal, the student filed an official First Information Report (FIR) at the local police station the next morning. Acting swiftly on the lead, a police team conducted a raid and successfully detained the suspect.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Borhanuddin Police Station, Md. Moniruzzaman, confirmed the development. “Based on the victim’s statement and the subsequent case filed under the relevant sections of the law, we have arrested the accused. He has been forwarded to the court for further judicial proceedings,” the OC stated.
The case highlights the growing concern over the misuse of social media platforms for predatory behaviour, particularly involving promises of marriage.
