Forces Prioritise Public Safety as Election Campaigning Begins

As Bangladesh stands on the precipice of the 13th National Parliamentary Election, the official campaign window is set to open tomorrow, Thursday. With candidates preparing to traverse their constituencies and engage in large-scale rallies, the nation’s law enforcement agencies have shifted into high gear. The primary objective, according to senior officials, is not merely to maintain order but to foster a genuine sense of security among the electorate.

A Multi-Dimensional Security Challenge

The commencement of the campaign brings a unique set of challenges. Authorities are bracing for potential inter-party skirmishes and the risk of misinformation campaigns designed to destabilise the voting atmosphere. Furthermore, the recovery of illegal firearms and the surveillance of high-risk individuals remain top priorities for the joint forces.

In an exclusive briefing on Wednesday night, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Baharul Alam, emphasised a visible approach to policing. “Our focus is on enhancing the public’s sense of security. As campaigning intensifies, our vigilance must also increase. We aim to ensure that conflict is prevented before it arises through heightened patrols and a more prominent presence on the streets,” the IGP stated.

Technological Integration and Surveillance

To combat modern threats, the police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) are deploying advanced technological assets. This includes the use of drones for aerial surveillance of large gatherings and body-worn cameras for field officers to ensure accountability and transparency.

Zero Tolerance for Violence

The Director General of RAB, A.K.M. Shahidur Rahman, reiterated that his force is on maximum alert. He highlighted that special training has been provided to RAB members specifically for election-period duties. Addressing recent incidents, he warned, “Those involved in attacks on law enforcement, such as the recent incident in Sitakunda, will be apprehended. We are conducting joint operations across the board.”

Addressing Systemic Risks

A significant concern for this election cycle is the potential influence of hardened criminals who have either escaped during recent jailbreaks or were recently released on bail. Law enforcement has confirmed that these individuals are under strict surveillance to prevent them from intimidating voters or candidates. Additionally, efforts are being intensified to recover weapons looted from police stations during past periods of unrest.

Intelligence agencies are working in tandem with district Police Supers (SP) and Metropolitan Police Commissioners to identify “threat actors” in every constituency. Political parties are also being engaged regularly to ensure they adhere to the code of conduct, ensuring that the democratic process remains peaceful and inclusive.
