“If Victorious In The Election, Messi Will Be Given The Recognition He Deserves.”

Barcelona are once again captivating fans with their on-field performances, yet off the pitch, tensions within the club’s internal politics are intensifying. On 15 March, the Catalan club will hold its presidential election, which could shape not only the club’s leadership but also the potential return of former superstar Lionel Messi.

One of the election’s main contenders, Catalan entrepreneur Víctor Font, has pledged that if he wins, his first action will be to re-establish contact with Messi. Font emphasised that reconnecting the Argentine legend with Barcelona is his primary objective. “If I am victorious, my very first phone call will be to Messi. I know the avenues—direct or indirect—to communicate with him,” Font stated. Restoring ties with the club’s historic icons forms a core part of his broader vision for the club.

Messi’s legacy at Barcelona is unparalleled. During his tenure, he scored 672 goals and won 35 trophies, cementing his status as arguably the greatest footballer in the club’s history. Financial difficulties forced the club to let him leave for Paris Saint-Germain in 2021, a move that left supporters heartbroken.

Font remarked, “Messi is the identity of Barcelona. Should I win the election, we will present our plans to him directly and ensure he receives the recognition and respect he deserves at the club.” He also criticised current president Joan Laporta, asserting that losing connection with a player of Messi’s calibre, along with his brand and symbolism, has been detrimental to the club. Font stressed that on sporting, commercial, and institutional fronts, re-establishing a relationship with Messi is essential, though he acknowledged the challenges involved.

Currently, Messi is playing for Inter Miami in the United States’ Major League Soccer. Last year, he extended his contract with the club until 2028. While many speculate that he may finish his playing career in the U.S., Messi has repeatedly stated that he wishes to retire in Barcelona with his family.

Víctor Font’s pledge to bring Messi back has already sparked renewed debate ahead of the election. Ultimately, the outcome will determine the direction of Barcelona’s future and the role Messi might play in it.
