Charli XCX Makes Bold Acting Debut

Charli XCX, the acclaimed British singer known worldwide for her chart-topping hits, is now making headlines not for her music, but for her burgeoning career in acting. At the ongoing Sundance Film Festival, she appeared as an actress, premiering three distinct projects: The Moment, I Want Your Sex, and The Gallerist. With these releases, Charli begins the new year firmly in the spotlight as a multifaceted performer.

On Saturday evening, Charli attended the premieres of two of these films. I Want Your Sex saw her sharing the screen with Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman, while The Moment is a documentary-style project centred on her controversial Brat album and the global tour that followed.

During the post-screening Q&A, Charli reflected on her artistic evolution, stating:

“I’m at a point where I want the ‘Brat’ era to conclude and to move forward on new paths. It’s not just about loving the music; as artists, we want to challenge ourselves, explore different fields of creativity, and embrace new experiences.”

In The Moment, Charli plays a version of herself, though the film incorporates elements of fiction. The narrative follows her as she navigates the pressures of international fame following the success of Brat, showing audiences the intensity and busyness of her daily life under constant scrutiny. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Charli’s performance is “highly engaging.” Reflecting on her role, she commented:

“I’m not exactly like the Charli in the film, but I’m not entirely different either. Perhaps my managers know the real truth. I can only say that as an artist, I am restless and constantly seeking new challenges.”

Charli’s ambitions extend beyond these three projects. She is slated to appear in at least four upcoming films, including the Dakota Johnson-directed A Tree Is Blue, as well as productions featuring Natalie Portman and Gina Ortega. A concise overview of her confirmed upcoming projects is provided below:

Reflecting on her acting journey, Charli remarked,

“I’ve been in the entertainment industry since I was 16 and have met countless people along the way. Those experiences inform my work on screen. I’ve never felt the need to force something new; I just let my experiences shape the art I create.”

As Charli XCX transitions from pop icon to screen performer, industry observers note that her versatility and willingness to take creative risks may establish her as a fully realised actor as well as a celebrated musician.
