In a notable incident during the ongoing election campaign in Natore-1 (Lalpur–Bagatipara) constituency, the local administration has imposed a fine of BDT 10,000 on independent candidate and expelled BNP leader, Advocate Taiful Islam Tipu, for violating electoral conduct rules.
According to sources from the Lalpur Upazila administration, the incident occurred on Saturday afternoon, 24 January, at an electoral discussion meeting held in the Koraitala area of Gopalpur municipality, Lalpur Upazila. During the session, Babu Ranjit Kumar Sarkar, a member of the district BNP convening committee, allegedly made indecent and offensive remarks about the BNP-nominated female candidate, Barrister Farzana Sharmin Putul. The comments were rapidly circulated on social media, drawing immediate attention from the authorities.
Following the verification of the complaint, Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Md. Abir Hossain promptly levied a fine of BDT 10,000 on Tipu on the same night. Tipu was also required to give a written undertaking pledging not to engage in similar misconduct in the future.
Lalpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Assistant Returning Officer, Zulhas Hossain Sourav, confirmed the action, emphasising that the administration is committed to ensuring a fair, peaceful, and tolerant election process. “Any form of indecent remarks or misconduct during the elections will be met with strict legal action,” he said.
