Meta, the global social media conglomerate, has announced a significant move to enhance the online safety of minors using artificial intelligence (AI) platforms. The company stated that interactions between minors and its AI characters across various platforms will be temporarily restricted.
The development was reported by Fox Business on Saturday, 24 January. Meta emphasised that all existing AI characters for minors will be temporarily withdrawn while safer, age-appropriate versions are developed. Until the new systems are fully operational, minors will be unable to access AI features on any Meta app. The restrictions will apply not only to registered minors but also to users identified as underage through age verification technologies.
In a recently updated blog post on its website, Meta highlighted that the decision aligns with its 2025 Safety Preview initiative, which had pledged enhanced parental controls to protect minors online. The new framework is designed to give parents greater authority over their children’s interactions with AI characters.
Key features of Meta’s proposed system include:
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Private Conversations Control | Parents can completely disable private chats between their child and AI characters |
| Selective AI Blocking | Parents can block specific AI characters from interacting with their child |
| Monitoring Overview | Parents receive general insights into the types of topics discussed by their child with AI chatbots |
| Age-Appropriate AI | New AI characters will adhere to PG-13 standards, preventing exposure to adult or inappropriate content |
Meta explained that recent reports of inappropriate or offensive behaviour by AI chatbots have prompted renewed attention to safety. The company stressed that these controls can be implemented without completely denying minors access to AI, allowing for moderated use while safeguarding against harmful content.
The upcoming AI characters designed for minors will integrate these protective features from launch. By enforcing PG-13 content standards and robust parental controls, Meta aims to provide a safe, engaging, and educational AI experience for younger users.
Industry experts suggest that Meta’s proactive approach could set a new benchmark in digital child safety, offering a model for other technology companies seeking to balance innovation with responsible usage. The initiative is expected to be rolled out progressively across all of Meta’s platforms once development and testing of the new AI characters are complete.
