Dilruba Khan Revives Folk Music Anew

Renowned Bangladeshi singer Dilruba Khan is set to captivate audiences once again, this time by presenting traditional folk music through a contemporary lens. Known for beloved hits such as Pagol Mon, Dui Bubon-er Dui Bashinda, and Bondhu Chirakal, Khan has recently completed recordings for a new project centred on Puthi and Kincha—two classical narrative song forms of rural Bengal.

The creative inspiration behind this initiative draws from the lives and struggles of prominent political figures, including former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman. Khan herself announced the project on social media, providing fans with a glimpse into the themes and motivations behind her latest work.

Reflecting on her childhood musical experiences in a detailed Facebook post, Khan wrote: “As children, we would gather at village fairs to listen to Puthi, Kincha, and other storytelling songs. Amid the rush of modern life, these cultural treasures are gradually disappearing. My small endeavour is to introduce this rich heritage to the younger generation.” She further explained, “Through Puthi and Kincha, I aim not only to highlight aspects of Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman’s life and struggles but also to renew interest in our folk traditions.”
