A tragic road traffic accident on the Hemayetpur-Singair regional highway has claimed the life of a young motorcyclist. The incident, which occurred on the afternoon of Monday, 26 January, involved a violent collision between a cement-laden lorry, a covered van, and a motorcycle, highlighting the ongoing safety concerns on the region’s arterial roads.
The fatality took place at approximately 4:30 pm in the Rishibari area. According to eyewitnesses and preliminary police reports, the tragedy unfolded when a Dhaka-bound lorry transporting cement collided head-on with a covered van travelling towards Manikganj.
Amidst the impact of the two heavy vehicles, a motorcycle caught in the vicinity was struck with immense force by the cement lorry. The rider, identified as 17-year-old Abir Hossain, was tragically killed instantly at the scene. Abir was the son of Aminul Islam, a resident of the Kholapara neighbourhood.
The force of the head-on collision was so severe that the covered van veered off the tarmac and plunged into a roadside ditch. While the driver of the van sustained significant injuries, he was rescued by locals and emergency responders before being transported to the Singair Upazila Health Complex, where he is currently undergoing medical treatment.
Conversely, the driver of the cement-laden lorry reportedly fled the scene immediately following the crash. Despite the logistical challenge of operating a heavy vehicle after such an impact, the driver managed to escape before law enforcement could establish a perimeter.
Mazharul Islam, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Singair Police Station, confirmed that the victim’s body has been recovered and the authorities are in the process of completing the necessary legal formalities. “We have seized the covered van from the ditch, and a concerted effort is underway to track down the fleeing lorry and its driver,” the OC stated.

This accident has reignited local demands for stricter enforcement of speed limits and better monitoring of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) on the Hemayetpur-Singair route. The highway is known for its high volume of commercial traffic, and the presence of cement lorries and covered vans often creates hazardous conditions for smaller vehicles and motorcycles.
As the community of Kholapara mourns the loss of a young life, the local administration is being urged to investigate whether mechanical failure or reckless overtaking contributed to this particular disaster.
