Ukraine has once again been struck by Russian attacks, resulting in at least three confirmed fatalities and several injuries, the country’s authorities reported on Wednesday, 28 January.
The latest assault comes just hours after a devastating night-time attack on Tuesday, 27 January, which claimed the lives of at least twelve people across the country. Ukrainian officials reported that a drone strike targeted a passenger train, killing five individuals aboard.
President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the sustained attacks, stating that they are obstructing ongoing peace efforts. He urged the international community to increase pressure on Moscow to halt the violence and bring an end to the war.
In the Kyiv region, Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the local military administration, confirmed via Telegram that a man and a woman were killed in Bilohorodka during the attacks. Subsequently, the Ukrainian National Police reported that the couple’s four-year-old child was injured, along with three other individuals.
Meanwhile, in central Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region, a 46-year-old man was killed in a separate drone strike, and five others were injured, one of them critically, according to Oleksandr Hanzham, head of the regional military administration.
These lethal attacks have compounded the hardship faced by many Ukrainians, leaving thousands without electricity amid freezing winter temperatures. Efforts to negotiate peace have continued despite the violence; representatives from Russia and Ukraine met in the United Arab Emirates last week under U.S. mediation. However, the attacks have persisted, undermining diplomatic initiatives.
President Zelensky has indicated that the next round of peace talks is scheduled for 1 February. He emphasised that international support is crucial to ensure that diplomatic channels remain open and that further civilian casualties are prevented.
For clarity, the recent casualties from the Russian attacks are summarised below:
| Date | Location | Fatalities | Injured | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 27 Jan | Across Ukraine | 12 | N/A | Night-time drone attacks, train targeted |
| 28 Jan | Bilohorodka, Kyiv Region | 2 | 4 | Couple killed, child and others injured |
| 28 Jan | Dnipropetrovsk Region | 1 | 5 | 46-year-old man killed, one critically injured |
The continuing escalation highlights the fragile nature of peace efforts and the urgent need for intensified international engagement to prevent further civilian suffering.
