The Dhaka Metropolitan Court has imposed a travel ban on Kaushik Hossain Taposh, chairman of private television channel GaanBangla and a prominent music industry figure. In addition, the court has directed the submission of income tax documents held in the names of Taposh, his wife Farzana Munni (also known as Farzana Arman), and their children.
The ruling came on Thursday following a request from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The order was issued by the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Sabbir Foyez, in response to an application submitted by Deputy Police Inspector Mehedi Hasan of the CID, who sought the travel restriction and the tax document disclosure. The court bench’s assistant, Riaz Hossain, confirmed the decision.
The CID application cited an ongoing investigation against Taposh relating to a case of attempted murder registered at the Uttara East Police Station in Dhaka. While probing this case, investigators reportedly discovered preliminary evidence suggesting money laundering. The authorities emphasised that allowing Taposh to leave the country could hinder the investigation and increase the risk of him absconding.
In addition to the travel restriction, the CID has requested that Taposh and his family provide all relevant income tax records. According to the application, Taposh is under scrutiny for allegedly acquiring assets beyond known sources of income, which prompted the appointment of an investigative officer under the Money Laundering Prevention and Suppression Act. While most departments have responded to inquiries regarding his movable and immovable properties, tax records in the names of Taposh and his family have not yet been received. The CID stressed that examining these documents is essential to complete the ongoing investigation.
Taposh was initially detained on 3 November 2024. During the July mass uprising, he was formally charged in multiple murder cases. After over seven months in custody, he was released on bail in June 2025. The current court directives represent a further step in ongoing probes into both violent crime and financial irregularities.
