High Court Dismisses Stay, 50th BCS Tomorrow

The High Court has dismissed a writ petition seeking to postpone the preliminary examination of the 50th Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS), clearing the way for the test to proceed as scheduled. The verdict was delivered on Thursday by a bench comprising Justice Rajik-al-Jalil and Justice Md. Anowarul Islam.

Following the ruling, Deputy Attorney General Nur Muhammad Azmi confirmed that the examination will take place tomorrow, Friday, across the country as originally planned.

The writ petition had been filed on Wednesday by four candidates, including Enamul Haque, who requested that the preliminary examination be deferred. The petition was listed as item number 77 on the High Court’s hearing schedule. During the proceedings, the candidates were represented by lawyer Nazmus Sakib, while the state was represented by Deputy Attorney General Azmi.

“The High Court has dismissed the petition directly, without any stay,” Azmi told the media. “Consequently, the preliminary exam will be conducted nationwide as scheduled, across eight divisional cities in 190 centres.”

The controversy stems from a prior request made on 20 January, when Enamul Haque and a group of job applicants submitted a memorandum to the Chairman of the Public Service Commission (PSC), asking for the suspension of all examinations during the election campaign period. As no action was taken on that memorandum, the candidates resorted to filing the writ petition.

This year, the 50th BCS has attracted 290,951 applications, reflecting a strong competition for limited government positions. The PSC plans to recruit a total of 2,150 candidates, combining both cadre and non-cadre posts. Of the 1,755 cadre positions, the largest allocation of 650 posts will be in the Health cadre, followed by 200 posts in Administration and 117 in the Police. The 395 non-cadre positions include 71 ninth-grade posts.

With the High Court ruling, candidates can now focus on their preparation, and all logistical arrangements for the exam, including centre management, security, and distribution of admit cards, have been completed by the PSC.

The examination is considered a critical step in the selection process for some of the country’s most coveted administrative, health, and law enforcement positions. Authorities have urged all candidates to attend their designated centres promptly and adhere strictly to all examination protocols.
