Alleged Neo-JMB Militant Apprehended in Dhaka Operation

In a targeted strike against domestic extremism, the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested a high-ranking member of the banned militant outfit Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). The suspect, identified as Ahsan Zahir Khan (50), was apprehended during an evening raid in the capital’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area.

Details of the Operation

The arrest took place at approximately 19:00 on Sunday, 1 February, near the south-western periphery of the Zia Uddan Lake. Acting on precise intelligence, CTTC operatives swooped in on the location, which investigators believe was being used as a clandestine meeting point. According to a formal press release issued by the DMP on Monday, Khan is an Ehsar (full-time) member of the neo-JMB faction—a group that remains a significant priority for national security forces.

Sources within the CTTC indicated that Khan and several unidentified associates had gathered at the lakeside to coordinate acts of sabotage against state property. While Khan was successfully detained, his collaborators managed to evade capture under the cover of darkness.

Digital Radicalisation and Communication

The investigation has unearthed a sophisticated digital footprint. Khan and his cell reportedly utilised an array of encrypted and mainstream social media platforms to maintain operational security. By employing various pseudonyms and aliases, the group managed to:

Coordinate clandestine gatherings via Telegram channels.

Disseminate extremist ideology through private WhatsApp and Messenger group chats.

Recruit and radicalise individuals using Facebook communities.

The CTTC noted that these digital tools were integral to the group’s “ideological implementation,” allowing them to plan subversive activities while remaining beneath the radar of conventional surveillance.
