Fog Advisory Issued for Inland Waterway Navigation

Dhaka, 3 February 2026: The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a precautionary advisory for vessels operating across the country’s inland waterways, citing dense fog as a potential hazard. According to the department, visibility along river channels may be significantly reduced due to heavy fog, creating risks for navigation. Mariners and ferry operators have been urged to exercise heightened vigilance and adhere to safety protocols during this period.

The advisory specifies that from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, light to moderate fog is expected across the nation’s internal river ports. Experts warn that visibility could fall to 500 metres or lower in certain areas. While navigation will not be completely prohibited during this period, vessel operators are advised to proceed with caution and maintain constant situational awareness.

The Meteorological Department has summarised the Tuesday forecast for inland waterway navigation as follows:

Time Interval Fog Condition Expected Visibility Navigation Guidance
5:00 a.m.–8:00 a.m. Dense fog 400–500 metres Navigate cautiously; signalling not mandatory
8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. Moderate fog Up to 500 metres Navigate cautiously; maintain monitoring

A department spokesperson emphasised: “Fog presents one of the greatest challenges to safe river navigation. Vessel operators should move slowly and with utmost care. Emergency signals and firefighting equipment at jetties should be kept ready at all times.”

Maritime safety experts further recommended that during periods of dense fog, vessel operators give particular attention when navigating near main channels, bridges, and embankments. Additionally, all vessels should ensure that their lighting systems and sound signalling devices are fully operational to alert other vessels and prevent accidents.

In summary, dense fog is expected to create hazardous conditions for inland waterway traffic on Tuesday. Navigators are urged to follow the advisory, exercise prudence, and maintain all necessary safety precautions to mitigate risks. Observing proper signalling, reducing speed, and constant monitoring of the river environment are strongly recommended to ensure safe passage.
