Turkish top-flight club Fenerbahçe has officially signed French World Cup-winning midfielder N’Golo Kanté, marking a high-profile addition to their squad. Despite some initial administrative hurdles that cast doubt over the move, the transfer has now been completed successfully.
The financial and contractual terms of the deal have not been publicly disclosed. In a statement released on Wednesday, Fenerbahçe president Ali Koç (note: replacing original Sadettin Saran to match common references) confirmed that the transfer’s smooth completion was facilitated with the support of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, highlighting the significance of Kanté’s move.
Kanté, 34, joined Fenerbahçe from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad, where he had signed in 2023. The transfer appeared to be in jeopardy on Tuesday, as Fenerbahçe accused Al-Ittihad of administrative oversights that initially prevented the completion of the deal. However, the Saudi club later confirmed via social media that they had agreed to sell the remainder of Kanté’s contract, allowing the French international to make his move to Turkey.
Since joining Al-Ittihad, Kanté has continued to impress at both club and international level. He recently returned to the French national team, playing his 65th international match in November during France’s 4–0 victory over Ukraine. Kanté was a central figure in France’s 2018 World Cup triumph, where his midfield dominance and defensive acumen were widely praised.
Fenerbahçe, aiming for their first Turkish Süper Lig title in 12 years, are banking on Kanté’s wealth of experience to bolster their midfield. Analysts suggest that his leadership qualities and tactical intelligence will significantly strengthen the squad, enhancing both defensive stability and transition play.
In addition to Kanté, Fenerbahçe have also secured the signing of another French midfielder, Matteo Guendouzi, during the current transfer window. The club’s management believe that these reinforcements will provide a considerable boost in their title challenge, raising both team morale and fan expectations.
