“Indomitable Bangladesh: A Stage to Forget World Cup Disappointment”

The Mirpur Academy Ground buzzed with activity as Bangladesh cricketers went through rigorous training sessions ahead of the Adommo Bangladesh T20 Cup. Between intense practice drills, laughter and casual conversations flowed among the players. Observing from a distance, several directors from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) engaged in lengthy discussions with the athletes, though the content of their conversation remained private.

At the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, preparations were equally meticulous. Officials checked lighting, broadcasters finalised setups, and BCB President Aminul Islam oversaw the arrangements personally, ensuring every detail was flawless. Yet, despite the grandeur and extensive planning, the shadow of disappointment lingered among the players.

One national team player, part of Bangladesh’s recently announced World Cup squad, reflected candidly:
“No amount of organisation can erase the sadness of missing the World Cup. Still, this is a tournament, and we have to play it as such.”

The Context Behind the Disappointment

Bangladesh’s absence from the T20 World Cup stems from security concerns. Following the exclusion of Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL, the national team decided against travelling to India for the World Cup. The BCB proposed hosting matches in Sri Lanka, but the International Cricket Council (ICC) did not approve the plan, confirming that Bangladesh would not participate in the tournament.

The players have reluctantly accepted this reality, yet disappointment persists, not only emotionally but financially. To mitigate losses, the BCB has organised the four-match Adommo Bangladesh T20 Cup, offering players a total prize fund and match fees amounting to BDT 2.565 million.

Prize / Fee Amount (BDT)
Champion 1,000,000
Runner-up 400,000
Man of the Tournament 50,000
Best Batsman 30,000
Best Bowler 30,000
Man of the Match 100,000
Match Fee 50,000
Match Win Bonus 1,000,000

However, monetary compensation cannot fully heal the disappointment. The team had meticulously prepared over two years for the T20 World Cup, and many players had harboured personal aspirations of making a mark on cricket’s biggest stage.

Dhummoketu XI head coach, Mohammad Salahuddin, acknowledged the challenge:
“Honestly, it is hard to shake off from the mind. Not everyone is mentally strong enough to overcome such disappointment. But dwelling on it does no one any good.”

Nevertheless, Salahuddin expressed confidence that players would channel their focus into the tournament. The first match kicks off at 6:00 PM tomorrow, with Dhummoketu XI facing Duronto XI.

Duronto coach Hannan Sarkar is enthusiastic about the youth players in his squad:
“We have a hunger for performance. These youngsters are desperate to excel, and that excites me. We even have Azizul Hakim, Jawad Abrar, and Iqbal Hossain, fresh from the U19 World Cup, in our team.”

Each team also has two BCB directors serving as mentors to guide strategy and mental preparation. Daily cultural programmes accompany the matches, with performances by the Warfage Band starting at 4:00 PM. Students can enter the stadium free of charge with valid identification.

The tournament will be broadcast live on T Sports, and all matches hold official T20 status. In line with the IPL’s “Impact Sub” rule, teams may introduce a substitute after the first innings, adding tactical depth to the competition.
