Wang Fuk Court Fire: Majority of Insurance Claims Settled

The Hong Kong Insurance Authority (HKIA) has reported that nearly 85 per cent of the 1,218 insurance claims filed following the Wang Fuk Court fire have been resolved. Of these, 1,032 claims have been closed, with compensation totalling approximately USD 66.3 million (around HKD 510 million). The remaining 156 claims are still under assessment, pending on-site inspections and detailed evaluations of losses.

A breakdown of claim settlements by insurance type is as follows:

Insurance Type Total Claims Settled Claims Settlement Rate Compensation Paid (USD million) Compensation Paid (HKD million)
General Insurance 1,030 863 84% 58.5 450
Long-term Insurance 188 169 90% 7.8 60
Total 1,218 1,032 85% 66.3 510

Clement Chiang, Chief Executive of HKIA, stated: “We are working closely with insurers to ensure that affected residents receive fair and timely compensation. While the majority of claims have been settled, a number of cases remain under local inspection and detailed loss assessment.”

He added that HKIA is coordinating with the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers to expedite the settlement of remaining claims. “Our aim is to ensure that no resident faces unnecessary delays, and that all legitimate claims are fully and appropriately resolved,” Chiang affirmed.

The Wang Fuk Court fire has become a test of the resilience and effectiveness of Hong Kong’s insurance framework. HKIA’s regulatory oversight ensures that compensation reaches claimants swiftly, while the USD-to-HKD exchange rate of 1:7.81 highlights the substantial economic impact of the incident.

Moreover, HKIA has assured residents that it will continue to coordinate with insurers to maintain a fast, organised, and equitable claims process. Additional guidance and support are being provided to those most severely affected to prevent further financial hardship.

The swift settlement of claims following the Wang Fuk Court fire is being seen as a benchmark for effective claims management in Hong Kong’s insurance sector, demonstrating the regulator’s ability to balance rigorous oversight with operational efficiency during large-scale urban disasters.
