Father Arrested in Barguna Over Alleged Sexual Assault

Barguna, Bangladesh — Police in Patharghata Upazila, Barguna, have arrested a man on allegations of sexually assaulting his 15-year-old daughter. The suspect, the girl’s father, was taken into custody late on Wednesday night following a complaint filed earlier that evening.

According to the official police report, the case was initiated when the victim’s mother lodged a formal complaint at Patharghata Police Station. Subsequently, the minor herself provided a written statement accusing her father of sexual assault.

The victim, a student at a local secondary school, alleges that the assaults occurred at their home in January, with the father reportedly assaulting her on two separate occasions. Disturbingly, it is alleged that she was administered contraceptive medication following the assaults.

A local representative revealed that this is not the first time the accused has faced allegations of sexual misconduct. Previously, a neighbour had accused him of assaulting another woman in the area. That case, however, was reportedly settled locally with a financial arrangement, and no legal action was pursued at the time.

Police have stated that the arrested man is scheduled to be presented before a court today, Thursday, while the minor will also be taken to court to provide her testimony under judicial supervision.

Patharghata Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Mong Chenla, told Prothom Alo that preliminary investigations confirmed the allegations, prompting swift action. “Given the sensitive nature of the case, the investigation is being conducted with utmost care and confidentiality,” he added.

The case has sent shockwaves through the local community, with residents expressing outrage at the alleged abuse and the family dynamics involved. Authorities have urged anyone with additional information to come forward to ensure thorough prosecution.
