Tensions reached a breaking point in the Munshiganj-3 constituency (Sadar and Gazaria) as a violent confrontation erupted between supporters of the official BNP candidate and those of a “rebel” independent contender. The incident occurred at approximately 12:30 pm on Saturday in Munshikandi village, located within the volatile Mollakandi Union.
The clash broke out when supporters of the “Football” symbol, representing the expelled district BNP Member Secretary Md. Mohiuddin, were conducting a door-to-door campaign. Witnesses report that as the procession entered Munshikandi, they were intercepted by loyalists of the official BNP nominee, Md. Kamruজ্জামান (contesting under the “Sheaf of Paddy” symbol).
What began as a heated verbal altercation swiftly escalated into a coordinated assault. Reports suggest that supporters of local BNP leaders Uzir Ahmed and Awlad Hossain Mollah initiated the attack using crude bombs (cocktails), machetes, and firearms. The ensuing skirmish saw both sides engage in a frantic chase, leaving the village in a state of panic.
Four individuals sustained significant injuries during the violence. The medical staff at Munshiganj General Hospital noted that the nature of the wounds suggested the use of improvised explosives and shotguns.
| Name of Injured | Type of Injury | Current Status |
|---|---|---|
| Md. Lizon | Shrapnel/Birdshot (Eyes & Body) | Transferred to Dhaka for advanced care |
| Nuruddin | Shrapnel/Birdshot (Legs & Body) | Transferred to Dhaka for advanced care |
| Faisal Hossain | Minor lacerations/Impact wounds | Receiving local treatment |
| Md. Nirob | Minor lacerations/Impact wounds | Receiving local treatment |
Local observers emphasize that this is not merely an electoral dispute but a continuation of a decades-long territorial rivalry. The “Wahid-Atik Mallick” faction (supporting the Football symbol) and the “Uzir-Awlad” faction (supporting the Sheaf of Paddy) have a history of lethal encounters. In November last year, a similar dispute over regional dominance resulted in the deaths of three men.
The parliamentary election has provided a fresh catalyst for these rivalries, with both sides utilizing political symbols to legitimise their quest for local control. Residents fear that the “Football” and “Sheaf of Paddy” camps are simply using the election as a pretext to settle old scores.
Following the incident, the Munshiganj Sadar Police arrived to secure the area and recovered several spent shell casings from the scene. Officer-in-Charge Md. Mominul Islam stated that the situation has since been brought under control, though a heavy police presence remains to prevent further retaliation.
“We are conducting raids to apprehend those responsible for the gunfire and explosions,” the OC confirmed, noting that law enforcement is currently investigating the source of the illegal firearms used in the village.
