Arson Attacks Target Netrokona Polling Stations

In a troubling prelude to the forthcoming elections, four polling stations in Netrokona Sadar Upazila were set ablaze late on Monday night, 9 February. The incidents, reportedly orchestrated by unidentified miscreants, occurred around 1:30 a.m., raising concerns over potential attempts to sow fear and disrupt the electoral process.

According to local sources, the arsonists initially targeted a classroom at Parla Government Primary School in the town. Petrol was poured inside the room before it was set on fire. Quick action by local residents helped contain the flames before they could cause extensive damage.

Subsequently, fires were reported at three additional polling centres: Light Government Primary School, Bamnamoha Government Primary School, and Darijagi Government Primary School. In each case, vigilant local citizens managed to bring the fires under control, preventing significant property loss.

Authorities visited the affected sites the following morning. While several benches at the polling stations were damaged, officials confirmed that the buildings themselves largely escaped major destruction.

Sajal Kumar Sarkar, Additional Superintendent of Police of the Sadar Circle, suggested that the attacks may have been intended to create panic. “We are analysing CCTV footage to identify those involved and will ensure that all responsible parties are brought under the law,” he said.

Asma Binte Rafiq, the Upazila Executive Officer and Assistant Returning Officer, echoed similar sentiments. She stated that the polling stations had sustained minimal damage and emphasised that the incidents were likely designed to intimidate rather than to cause actual harm. Legal proceedings are expected following a full investigation.

Summary of Affected Polling Stations

Polling Station Damage Level Immediate Action Taken
Parla Government Primary School Minor Fire contained by locals
Light Government Primary School Minor Fire controlled promptly
Bamnamoha Government Primary School Minor Flames extinguished by locals
Darijagi Government Primary School Minor Fire quickly brought under control

Election officials and law enforcement agencies continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure the security of voters and polling infrastructure ahead of the upcoming elections.
