As Bangladesh prepares for the Thirteenth National Parliamentary Election, scheduled for Thursday, 12 February 2026, the intersection of high finance and frontline politics has come into sharp focus. Three prominent figures from the insurance sector—spanning both Life and Non-Life categories—have officially entered the fray.
Notably, all three candidates are contesting under the banner of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), sporting the ‘Sheaf of Paddy’ (Dhaner Sheesh) symbol. Their transition from corporate boardrooms to the hustings highlights the significant role that industrial leaders continue to play in the nation’s democratic process.
The candidates include current and former chairmen who hold substantial sway over the country’s financial landscape. The table below provides a concise overview of their candidacies and primary business affiliations:
| Candidate Name | Constituency | Insurance Affiliation | Current Key Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sayeed Ahmed | Shariatpur-1 | Global Insurance (Director/Ex-Chairman) | President, Bangladesh Insurance Association (BIA) |
| Mohammad Fakhrul Islam | Noakhali-5 | Farast Islami Life Insurance (Chairman) | MD, Metro Homes Development |
| Abdul Awal Mintoo | Feni-3 | Pragati Life Insurance (Ex-Chairman) | Chairman, National Bank Limited |
Contesting from Shariatpur-1, Sayeed Ahmed is a heavyweight in the insurance industry, currently serving as the President of the Bangladesh Insurance Association (BIA) for the 2025-2026 term. His business empire is vast, encompassing shipping, air services, and technology.
Beyond his role at Global Insurance Ltd, Mr Ahmed chairs the Ahmed Foundation and several prominent firms, including Purity Foods and Bangladesh Check Technology. His leadership extends to the maritime sector as the President of the Bangladesh Cargo Vessel Owners’ Association.
Representing the BNP in Noakhali-5, Mohammad Fakhrul Islam brings an international academic background to his candidacy, having graduated from Western University in Virginia, USA. As the current Chairman of Fareast Islami Life Insurance, he has successfully diversified his interests into real estate and healthcare.
Mr Islam is a pivotal figure in the Metro Group, serving as Managing Director for several development and construction firms. He is deeply embedded in social welfare, holding leadership positions in the Noakhali Forum and the Metro Foundation.
A veteran of both commerce and politics, Abdul Awal Mintoo is contesting from Feni-3. The former President of the FBCCI, Mr Mintoo is perhaps one of the most academically decorated candidates. He holds multiple Master’s degrees from the State University of New York and the University of London, specialising in Agricultural Economics and International Business Law.
The former Chairman of Pragati Life Insurance, he now leads National Bank Limited as its Chairman. Mr Mintoo is also a noted author; his book, Bangladesh: Anatomy of Change, remains a significant text on the nation’s socio-economic evolution.
The upcoming election and concurrent referendum will see simultaneous voting across 299 parliamentary constituencies. Polling stations will remain open from 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM, marking a critical juncture for the country’s political stability and economic trajectory.
