According to Roksana Begum, the Deputy Director of the Rangpur regional office, Maidul Islam entered her private chamber during the afternoon. When questioned regarding the purpose of his visit, the teacher produced a mobile phone message concerning the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) enlistment of staff at his school.
The MPO system is the mechanism through which the Bangladeshi government provides salary subsidies to teachers of non-government educational institutions. Maidul Islam reportedly claimed he had brought 7 lakh BDT to ensure the necessary approvals for his colleagues’ enlistment.
“He repeatedly gestured toward a bag in his possession, insisting it contained 7 lakh BDT,” Deputy Director Roksana Begum stated. “He pleaded with me to accept the money and facilitate the administrative process for his school.”
