US Ambassador Visits Bengal Shilpalay in Dhaka

The United States Ambassador to Bangladesh, Brent Christensen, paid a distinguished visit to Bengal Shilpalay in Dhanmondi on Wednesday morning. The visit underscored the deepening cultural ties between the two nations and marked the formal conclusion of a significant restoration initiative dedicated to one of Bangladesh’s most revered painters.

Ambassador Christensen was warmly received at the arts complex by the senior leadership of the Bengal Foundation, including Chairman Abul Khair, Director General and Trustee Luva Nahid Choudhury, and Director Ataur Rahman. During the visit, the Ambassador received a comprehensive briefing on the successfully completed ‘S.M. Sultan Art Conservation Project’.

Preserving a National Legacy

The project, implemented by the Bengal Foundation, was made possible through the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP). Its primary objective was the rigorous research and physical restoration of the works of S.M. Sultan, an artist whose depictions of muscular peasantry and rural resilience remain central to the Bangladeshi identity.

The initiative integrated deep art-historical research with modern scientific techniques to create a sustainable restoration model. Beyond the immediate repair of canvases, the project focused on long-term capacity building. A pivotal component involved training a new generation of Bangladeshi art conservators, thereby ensuring that the nation possesses the local expertise required to protect its cultural heritage in the years to come.

Cultural Engagement and Diplomacy

Following a technical presentation at the Sultan Art Conservation Studio, Ambassador Christensen joined foundation representatives for a formal luncheon. The diplomatic party, which included the Ambassador’s wife, Diane Dow, and senior embassy officials, later toured the Quamrul Hassan Exhibition Hall. Here, they viewed a curated selection of masterpieces from the Bengal Foundation’s permanent collection.

The visit concluded with a walkthrough of the Bengal Boi premises, where the Ambassador was briefed on the foundation’s diverse initiatives across literature, traditional music, and indigenous crafts. The high-level delegation included:

Jennifer Johnson, Deputy Management Officer

Monica Shie, Public Affairs Counsellor

Raihana Sultana, Public Engagement Specialist

Faroha Suhrawardy, Public Engagement Coordinator

This visit highlights the United States’ continued commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s rich cultural tapestry through collaborative heritage preservation and academic exchange.
