In a major coup ahead of the 11th edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Hyderabad Houston Kingsmen announced on Thursday the signing of Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell. The move is widely seen as a statement of intent, signalling the franchise’s ambition to compete at the highest level in the upcoming tournament.
Maxwell will make his PSL debut when the league runs from 26 March to 3 May. Known for his aggressive batting and effective off-spin bowling in T20 cricket, the Australian star is expected to add both firepower and invaluable experience to the Kingsmen squad.
Maxwell brings an impressive record at both international and franchise levels. Representing Australia in 129 T20 Internationals, he has amassed 2,897 runs at a strike rate of 158.42, including five centuries and 12 half-centuries, with a top score of 145. With the ball, he has claimed 49 wickets.
At franchise level, Maxwell is a seasoned T20 campaigner, having featured in the Big Bash League (BBL), Indian Premier League (IPL), The Hundred, and the Vitality Blast. Across all T20 matches, he has played 502 games, scoring 10,986 runs at a strike rate of 154.16, registering eight centuries and 58 fifties, while taking 196 wickets.
| Format | Matches | Runs | Strike Rate | 50s | 100s | Wickets |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| T20 Internationals | 129 | 2,897 | 158.42 | 12 | 5 | 49 |
| Franchise T20 | 502 | 10,986 | 154.16 | 58 | 8 | 196 |
Earlier, on 6 February, the Kingsmen had also secured a direct signing of Australian top-order batter Marnus Labuschagne, strengthening their lineup further.
This season marks a historic change in the PSL, with player auctions being introduced for the first time. Previously, the league relied on a draft system for its first ten editions. The inclusion of two new teams has made squad-building a complex and competitive affair, with franchises now competing to assemble the most balanced and formidable squads.
With Maxwell and Labuschagne in their ranks, Hyderabad Houston Kingsmen are signalling a bold challenge to their PSL rivals. Fans can anticipate a mix of explosive batting, clever spin bowling, and high-octane cricket as the tournament unfolds in late March.
