Symbolic Flag Hoisting at Abandoned Party Office

In a striking display of political resolve, the national flag was hoisted atop the charred and abandoned headquarters of the Keraniganj Model Thana Awami League on Friday. The act was carried out by Sonia Akter, the wife of the local party’s general secretary, Altaf Hossain Biplob, marking a rare public appearance by a figure associated with the embattled political organisation.

A Calculated Gesture

At approximately 12:30 pm, witnesses observed a woman clad in a burqa arriving at the derelict facility located in the Ghatarchar area of the Taranagar Union. The building, once a bustling hub for regional politics, has stood as a skeletal ruin since the height of the anti-discrimination student movement in August 2024.

According to onlookers, Sonia Akter climbed to the rooftop of the fire-damaged structure, secured the national flag, and departed the scene swiftly before local residents or security forces could intervene. This symbolic gesture comes at a time when the party’s activities remain under intense scrutiny and various legal restrictions following the political transition last year.

Context of the Abandonment

The headquarters became a focal point of civil unrest during the mass protests of 2024. On 4 August of that year, the building was stormed, vandalised, and set ablaze by protesters. Since then, the local leadership, including Altaf Hossain Biplob, has largely remained in hiding or refrained from public political activity. Efforts to reach Mr Biplob for comment following the incident were unsuccessful, as his mobile phone remained disconnected.

Timeline of the Keraniganj Headquarters

Date Event Institutional Impact
4 August 2024 Peak of Anti-Discrimination Protests Facility vandalised and set on fire.
5 August 2024 Political Transition Party leaders enter hiding; office abandoned.
Late 2024 Legal Prohibitions Restrictions placed on formal party activities.
20 February 2026 Symbolic Flag Hoisting Sonia Akter reclaims the rooftop briefly.

The Symbolism of the Flag

In the current Bangladeshi political climate, the hoisting of the national flag by individuals associated with the former ruling party is viewed by analysts as an attempt to reassert a sense of legitimacy and patriotism. While the Awami League’s formal operational capacity in regions like Keraniganj is currently non-existent, these individual acts suggest a subterranean effort to maintain morale among the grassroots supporters.

Local authorities in Keraniganj have yet to confirm if any legal repercussions will follow this incident. However, the event has sparked significant conversation across social media platforms, highlighting the lingering political divisions within the outskirts of the capital.
