Mother and Infant Burned Amid Witchcraft Allegations

A harrowing incident in Jharkhand, India, has left a mother and her ten-month-old son dead after being set on fire following accusations of practising witchcraft. The shocking attack occurred in the remote village of Kudsai, around 250 kilometres from the state capital, Ranchi. Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime, while the 32-year-old victim’s husband, Kolhan Sinku, remains critically injured in hospital.

Police have stated that they are actively pursuing other individuals believed to be involved. The accused remain in custody and have made no public statements. According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), more than 2,500 people were killed in India between 2000 and 2016 over alleged witchcraft, with the majority being women.

Incident Background

Kudsai is an indigenous village with approximately 50 mud-built houses. Tensions had escalated recently due to the sudden deaths of several livestock and the illness and subsequent death of a local man, Pustun Birua. Rumours quickly spread that Jyoti Sinku, a local woman, had caused Pustun’s condition through black magic.

Pustun’s wife, Jano Birua, explained that her husband suffered repeated fainting episodes and severe anxiety. With no qualified medical practitioners in the village, the family consulted a local healer, who reported no visible disease. Poverty prevented the family from taking Pustun to a distant hospital.

The Attack

On the evening of Pustun Birua’s death, a group of approximately twelve people, including five women, attacked the Sinku household. Kolhan recounted from his hospital bed: “I pleaded with them to resolve the matter through the village council or mediation, but they did not listen.” The assailants set fire to Jyoti and her child, killing them instantly.

The district police have filed cases of murder and criminal conspiracy based on Kolhan’s account and corroborating testimony from other family members. A special investigation team has been formed to apprehend the remaining perpetrators. Authorities have also announced plans to conduct awareness campaigns in rural areas to combat superstition and prevent similar tragedies.

The incident highlights the persistent danger of witchcraft-related violence in rural India, often targeting women. NCRB data indicates that in most such cases, the victims are women accused of practising sorcery. Police stress the need for community education and vigilance to prevent the recurrence of such brutal acts.
